Chimney Fires Awareness

CHIMNEY FIRES

One of the most hazardous risk in burning fuels is the possibility of a chimney fire. In the UK, there are about 7000 chimney fires a year.

WHAT CAUSES A CHIMNEY FIRE?

They usually occur due to a build-up of materials in the flue of the chimney when your fire is not burning hot enough or the fuel is not burning efficiently. Rather than the fuel being burned, it turns in vapours and condenses into a thick tar that lines the chimney walls. If the temperature inside the chimney is hot enough, the deposits can ignite and cause a fire.

HOW TO PREVENT A CHIMNEY FIRE?

Swept and clean your chimney regularly. If smokeless fuels are being used, sweep the chimney at least once a year. If bituminous coal is used, sweep the chimney at least twice a year.

In response to National chimney fire safety week, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service have provides a downloadable leaflet containing handle tips to prevent a chimney fire.
